A few weeks ago I was invited on to talk on BBC Cov and Warks about the Bishop of Birmingham's statement that too many school nativity plays bore little resemblance to the Gospel stories. I was on his side!
The other person on the piece was Debbie Isitt, the director of Nativity. My line was that the story should be true to the original, without Lobsters ... Remember Love Actually?
Karen: So what's this big news, then?
Daisy: [excited] We've been given our parts in the nativity play. And I'm the lobster.
Karen: The lobster?
Daisy: Yeah!
Karen: In the nativity play?
Daisy: [beaming] Yeah, *first* lobster.
Karen: There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?
Daisy: Duh.
Now I was gracious enough to tell Debbie that I had not seen her film (in the hope that she might invite me along!) but now I have seen it I have to come clean and say I wept, both with laughter and with joy to see the passionate telling of the story of the birth of Jesus and the transformation that took place in the kids in the story. (Annabel and Ellie were just as amused by my tears!)
Debbie - I take it all back ... it was FAB! Thank you.
